A RAW MATERIAL

Timber is a natural resource - selecting quality wood from sustainable sources is key.

Timber is a captivating material to work with - its character can be so varied from species to species, and even from tree to tree. As a design begins to fully develop in the workshop, the timber selection process is always a crucial stage; selecting sustainable material of the highest quality is essential in creating stand out pieces. As the studio has developed, so too has the sourcing process, and for the majority of furniture produced, timber that is grown, felled and processed within a local area to where the workshop is based will be predominantly used. Knowing that this raw material has come from local forests in the UK - with a much smaller carbon footprint than imported species - is incredibly important when working towards a more sustainable end result.

The sawmills that the Studio now most frequently use have an extensive range of native hardwoods milled to an exceptional standard, with all the character and personality that comes from our native timber. Although designs predominantly feature English Oak, timbers including Ash, Cherry, Beech and Sycamore are also readily available. Depending on the vision for your furniture piece, there are options to use waney-edged boards or ‘feature’ timbers (brown oak, pippy oak, spalted ash etc), though there is more limited availability of this rarer stock. Of course, certain projects - particularly the more contemporary in style - will require timber products that are imported, and the Studio works with trusted timber merchants to ensure that all material is FSC certified, and of the highest standards.
